The Famous - POPCHIPS

POPCHIPS

Potato chips are deliciously addictive, but also undeniably unhealthy. This is likely the reason behind why many brands have turned to snacks that are popped or puffed as a healthier, lighter alternative. And according to Whole Foods, who named puffed and popped snacks one of 2018's top trends, new technology is behind this shift as well.

"New extrusion methods (ways of processing and combining ingredients), have paved the way for popped cassava chips, puffed pasta bow ties, seaweed fava chips and puffed rice clusters."

Original flavor Popchips

Popchips is a brand of processed potato and corn products marketed as similar to potato chips. They are manufactured by processing potato starch at high pressure and temperature, in a process similar to that used for puffed rice cakes.

The popchips people popped by the New Times office last week and left behind a basket of popchips in all flavors. I'd never had a popchip before -- I'm not much of a bagged-snack sort of guy -- but here are ten quick impressions:

1.The sour cream & onion, and sea salt & vinegar, are the two best flavors; the vinegar chips have an especially fetching tang.

2.A cheddar popchip is to a Cheez Doodle what a sausage patty is to a sausage.

3.Salt & pepper was my third favorite, although for some reason it was the first gone -- and therefore didn't make the team photo.

4.The barbecue popchips would probably be great if you like barbecue chips.

the original potato, either. It tastes too

much like a potato chip that didn't quite come out right. Whereas when

flavors are added, I think of them more as circular potato snacks

rather than as failed chips.

DRY MARTINI - Recipe

DRY MARTINI

A classic martini technically should be made with gin, although if your prefer vodka that's no sin either. Order it up and stirred, not shaken (sorry 007).

Ingredients
4 oz. gin or vodka
1 oz. dry vermouth

Directions
Stir vermouth and gin with cracked ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and garnish with an olive.

Sweet RoLLed Ice Cream TaCos

Sweet RoLLed Ice Cream

Rolled ice cream is a sensational Thai frozen dessert. Unlike most ice creams made ahead of time in an electronic ice cream machine, rolled ice cream—also known as stir-fried ice cream—is made to order by hand.
One of the most traditional warm-weather treats is ice cream -- a frozen mixture of cream, sugar, milk and flavorings.

The popular dessert was originated by street vendors in Thailand. This isn't an ordinary soft-serve ice cream; rather, it's rolled and hand-crafted in front of each customer

Stir-fried ice cream "I-Tim-Pad" "ไอติมผัด" in Thai, ice pan ice cream, rolled ice cream or ice cream rolls is a hand made ice cream dessert made with milk poured on an iced grill, mixed with fruit or different ingredients on the ice-pan.Stir-fried ice cream "I-Tim-Pad" "ไอติมผัด" in Thai, ice pan ice cream, rolled ice cream or ice cream rolls is a hand made ice cream dessert made with milk poured on an iced grill, mixed with fruit or different ingredients on the ice-pan.

Many people believe the dessert first became popular in the United States after the wives of early presidents served it in the White House. According to the White House Historical Association, Dolley Madison, the wife of President James Madison, served ice cream there for the first time. That was in the early 1800s.

But ice cream has changed a lot in the last 200 years.

And now, a new style of ice cream that started in Southeast Asia is spreading in the United States: rolled ice cream.
This summer, rolled ice cream could be found at street festivals from New York City to Nashville, Tennessee. At Sweet Charlie’s, a store in Philadelphia, customers often wait in line for over two hours to order their rolled ice cream.

Some people call it “Thai stir-fried ice cream.” That is because it looks like it is made on a hot grill, in the same way people cook meat and vegetables.

But the grill used for making the treat is actually extremely cold.

The ice cream “chefs” add things like cookies, candy, and even pizza into the ice cream mixture. Then, the ice cream begins to freeze. Next, the chef spreads it in a thin layer over the cold surface. After a few seconds, the chef uses a tool to scrape the ice cream off the cold surface and turn it into a roll. The rolls are then put in a cup and covered with fruit or flavored syrup.

One serving costs about six dollars in most places in the United States.

Thailand most often gets credit for the creation; a popular YouTube channel called “Ice Cream Rolls” reports that the dessert started there. Millions of people watch the channel’s latest videos each week.

Chicken and Poppy Seeds Pasta - Recipe

Chicken and Poppy Seeds Pasta

Servings: 8

Ingredients
10 oz. bow tie pasta (about 4 cups)
2 cups cooked and cooled, diced chicken breasts (I used rotisserie)
12 oz. red grapes halved (about 2 cups)
1 cup diced celery
3/4 cup Fisher Sliced Almonds
1/2 cup sliced green onions green portion
1/3 cup dried cranberries (optional)

Dressing
1/2 cup fat free plain Greek Yogurt
1/2 cup full fat mayonnaise
3 Tbsp white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar
3 Tbsp honey
2 Tbsp granulated sugar
1 1/2 Tbsp poppy seeds
1/2 tsp salt then more to taste
Instructions

Cook pasta to al dente in salted boiling water according to directions on package. Drain then rinse with cold water and let drain completely. Set aside and let cool.

For the dressing:

In a mixing bowl whisk together Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, vinegar, honey, sugar, poppy seeds and 1/2 salt.

Add drained pasta to a salad bowl. Add in chicken, grapes, celery, almonds, green onions and cranberries then pour dressing over top and toss to evenly coat. Season with more salt to taste and toss. Chill at least 30 minutes (and up to 1 day) before serving (this allows some time for the pasta to absorb the dressing and time for the flavors to meld). Serve chilled.
